It’s been all over the news today, Ukulele sales in Britain have doubled to around 250,000 in the last five years. The papers are saying it’s because of the band ‘Mumford and Sons’ but I think it’s more than that. The uke is such an accessible instrument and brings fun and enjoyment so quickly, it’s hardly surprising it’s popular.
I teach it to my students at school, more and more Music teachers are doing the same, and the kids love it! They pick it up so quickly and then can’t wait to get them out again. This has got to be where the boom is stemming from – enthusiastic Music teachers passing on their love of the instrument and the joy of making music to their students. So, on what is supposedly ‘National Ukulele Day’, why not put the success of the instrument down to the hard working Music teachers and other tutors instead? Even if I do say so myself
